NEWS : Invention of the instrument for measuring air pressure, Barometer

The atmosphere exerts a pressure on every object on the earth. This pressure is called atmospheric pressure. This instrument that measures the pressure is called “barometer”, which is a combination of the Greek words “baros” meaning weight and “metron” meaning measure.

Toricelli’s experiment is as follows: He fills a glass tube, which is close to one metre long, one of the two ends of which is closed and the other open, with mercury. He dips the open end into the bowl filled with mercury and starts to observe the tube by holding it upright. He sees that some of the mercury in the tube has flowed into the bowl and a void appears at the closed end. With this measurement made in 1643, it was understood that the atmospheric pressure decreased and the oxygen rate in the air decreased as you go up from the bottom.

The decrease in oxygen at higher altitudes means a decrease in the oxygen content in the blood, which can lead to loss of sight, hearing and hearing, and even heart attacks. The Qur’an states that atmospheric pressure also decreases as one ascends to higher altitudes.

This is expressed in the Qur’anic verse as “He makes your chest narrow and troubled, as if you were ascending to the sky”. If we pay attention, it will be seen that the term “chest” is used instead of things such as intellect, health and wealth, the absence of which causes distress to people. In other words, it is intended to draw attention to the relation of ascension with the chest. This expression points to the difficulty in breathing due to the decrease in oxygen as one ascends to high places, and therefore there will be a narrowing of the heart. The Holy Qur’an foretold this fact 1015 years ago.
