Since our aim is not to do an exegesis, but to provide meaningful information, we will try to express these verses, which have not been fully comprehended for more than a thousand years, in the shortest and clearest way possible without going into detail. Please refer to the books of tafsir for detailed information.
More than twenty different approaches/theories have been developed for the letters Hurufu Muqatta, which are translated as truncated letters. Although an attempt has been made to interpret them in almost every field, from numerical to angelic names, no explanation has been more effective than the other, and no general opinion has been formed.
We humbly wish to put the result of our work here in a concise manner. We seek refuge in Allah from any claims. The basis of our study, which differs from the others, is related to when and how these verses came. Because we believe that the meaning of the verses and the approach to finding them will be revealed in this way.
As for describing the path we have followed, it can be explained as the relationship of the Holy Qur’an with the Holy Qur’an, then how and in what way Gabriel (Gabriel) conveyed the verses to the Prophet through revelation, and finally whether the recording of these cut letters took place immediately after the revelation. So let us begin.
We have already discussed in our first topic that there were some stages before the creation of the universe, and now we would like to point out that not everything in the universe came into existence after that explosion.
Even if we are the last living beings in the universe to be created, there is one aspect of us that is unrelated to the creation of the universe, and that is the soul. Yes, our soul is breathed into us by an angel in charge while we are still in our mother’s womb before we are born. This is one of the two entities included from outside the universe.
The Messenger of Allah (saw) expressed this in the following words.
“The creation of one of you is gathered in forty days in his mother’s womb. Then he has ‘alaka’ like this one, then he has ‘mudğa‘ like this one. Then an angel is sent to him and a spirit is breathed into him. The angel is commanded four words: “His sustenance, his fate, his deeds, and whether he will be said or shaki...”[31]
The other is the Holy Quran.
…And We have revealed to you a spirit (a Book that revives the hearts) by Our command.[32]
These two spirits were included in the universe later. Levh-i Mahfuz (the book in which everything is written), where the Holy Quran is taken, is also a spirit.
“It is an honorable Qur‘an, which is in the Holy Qur’an.”[33]
Hafiz Abu al-Qasim al-Tabarani narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas.
The Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Verily, Allah Almighty has created the Holy Qur’an out of white pearl. Its pages are of red rubies, its pen is light, its writing is light, and each day in it is 360 lahz. He creates, sustains, kills, resurrects, exalts, humbles, and does what He wills.“
The angel Gabriel (a.s.), who received this spirit as a revelation, descended, with Allah’s permission, first collectively to the first heaven called Baytul Izza. From there, he took the revelation piece by piece and implanted it into the heart of the Prophet.
I swear by the Book that is clear and shows the truth![34] Surely We have made it a Qur’an in Arabic so that you may reflect and reason.[35] Verily, it is in the Holy Book, the Holy Tablet, which is with Us. Most exalted is He, most wise. [36]
At this stage, if we pay attention, it is stated that “we made an Arabic Quran” from the Levh-i Mahfuz, which is the first point of origin, to the Prophet as a revelation. This means that by the time it reaches us humans, the spirit in this Levh-i Mahfuz has already been implanted in the heart of the Messenger of Allah. The important thing is to understand this well. How and in how many ways revelation can come is expressed in the verses of Surah Shura.
Allah speaks to a man only by revelation or from behind a veil. Or He sends a messenger and reveals to him whatever He wills by His permission. Verily, He is the Exalted, the Owner of judgment and wisdom. And We have revealed to you by Our command a spirit (a Book that revives the hearts).[37]
Yes… The point we have reached at this stage is that the Holy Qur’an and religious sources clearly state that the relationship between the human soul and the universe is an afterthought and has no antecedents. This leads us to no other truth than the saying “al-insanu wa’l-Qur’anu taw’emani / Man and the Qur’an are twin brothers”, which is accepted by some as a hadith and by others as a Sufi idiom. So the right question that will change the way we look at the Holy Qur’an should be “what is a soul twin?”. Because it is more often spoken of as a union of perfect harmony. It is not. A soul mate is something that “completes” you. So whoever you are, wherever you live, whatever emotions you have, whatever morals you have, the Holy Quran is what completes you.
The Holy Qur’an, then, complements you in that it communicates by describing people with similar social, cultural or economic backgrounds, similar status or intelligence, and from this point of view explains their status (believer, polytheist, infidel, etc.) with certain adjectives.
So, we can summarize what we have said so far as follows. These twin souls (the Qur’an and the human being), which were introduced into the universe later on, are the identifiers and complements of each other for this place where we are sent to the world of testing.
It is the Hurufu Muqattales that provide the environment that prepares the way for these soul twins to define and complement each other.
If we ask why it is not at the beginning of other suras, it can be said that it is in order to encourage attention and concentration before the verses describing the Quran and the characteristics of revelation. Because it is only at the beginning of the surahs before the revelation or the description of the characteristics of the Holy Quran. And we observe that it creates the environment that prepares the human soul for the relationship of the following verses with these features. Let us now proceed to explain how this happens.
The change in your mood with a piece of music you listen to, whether good or bad, lively or sluggish, is the effect of that music on your soul. So what makes it effective? This is where the “Law of Vibration” comes into play. The law of vibration is about matching what you want with a certain frequency. The “Law of Attraction” takes this a little further and allows you to create that frequency within yourself, allowing it to happen through “internalization or affirmations”.
For example, let’s say you listen to a sad song. After a while, if you start to internalize this folk song, you will become a person who feels sad, grieving or unhappy through the music, even if you have no experience/relationship with the subject or events. In other words, if music is to be accepted as food for the soul, it is necessary to pay attention to whether the food is organic or not.
By saying the Hurufu Mukattas with the necessary extensions (such as elif-laaaaaam-miiiimmmm), you create a frequency in accordance with the law of vibration and create a ground to internalize the following verses by listening. In this way, the Qur’an and the verses describing the characteristics of revelation are preceded by an environment for concentration and concentration. It is the voice of revelation, as Imam Suyuti said. As if to say, “Open your ears and listen to these sweet melodies!” Or according to Zamakhshari: “It is a reminder to the minds”. To prepare before beginning the recitation. Like tuning the maqam to the music.
Because the soul becomes favorable to internalize this frequency of the vibration through the law of attraction. Thus, you enter into a state of mind that will provide the necessary importance to the messages to be given. And your soul twin starts to convey its message. So much so that we will be able to benefit in the maximum way by paying attention to what he will say about the next revelation or the Qur’an in a clairvoyant, perceptive and concentrated state.
Of course, not every hearer can receive this benefit. As it is stated in Surat al-Sad: “The Qur’an is a blessed Book which We have sent down to you that they may ponder over its verses and that those of understanding may take counsel.” [38]
The different truncated letters at the beginning of the twenty-nine suras serve the same function in relation to the content of the suras. Since these are the subject of tafsir and would take up voluminous space, we do not find it appropriate to explain them in detail. Our aim is to give a meaning that will benefit our view of the Holy Qur’an.
The “Law of Vibration” that our Lord placed in the universe shows us that everything is energy and that we can match the energy of what we are trying to manifest. This is something that is now being exploited commercially, but in combination with other universal laws and quantum physics, it helps us achieve a more harmonious life. We are merely explaining that the Holy Quran is related to and intertwined with these laws.
As a result, the answer sought in this study on the meaning of Hurufu muqatta should have been such that it should have included various answers ranging from the diversity of the letters, the reason why it is at the beginning of the surah, its contribution to tafsir and tafsir, and why it has been used without the need for exegesis like others. Unless these fundamental questions are addressed, the views that have been put forward about its self-evidentness or its service to human beings without knowing its meaning are, frankly, of little use. The utilization of the Qur’an on the basis that the Qur’an and human beings are soul twins is a healthy and necessary explanation that includes many different perspectives and deep explanations. We will do so to the extent necessary in the relevant verses in the following topics, insha’Allah. We have also mentioned that the letters of Huruf-u Muqatta have the role of providing intensity, attention, understanding, comprehension, grasping, arousing interest, providing meaning with the view of tidbbür and clairvoyance. Allah (swt) knows best.
